Spain’s electricity system, right now

What Spain is generating, using and trading, read from Red Eléctrica every quarter hour, with the price OMIE set for every quarter hour of today and tomorrow.

The price today and tomorrow

Reading the price.

Reading the price.

OMIE’s day-ahead auction sets one price for every quarter hour of the next day, published early in the afternoon, so tomorrow’s line appears after about 13:00 Spanish time. A battery earns on the gap: it buys in the cheap quarter hours and sells in the dear ones. Spain’s batteries bought 83% of their charging between 12:00 and 17:00 over the latest three months OMIE has published (what they traded).

Storage, right now

Reading the storage.

Red Eléctrica reports two kinds of storage to the platform, each both ways: pumped hydro (3,418 MW installed in its figures for 2026) and energy storage (31.6 MW). That storage line cannot be Spain’s battery fleet: 21 batteries are registered to trade on OMIE, 338 MW where their size is published, and 12 of them sell through a unit they share with the solar or wind plant they were added to. Red Eléctrica publishes a battery line of its own every five minutes on its own site, which this page will show once Red Eléctrica answers our request to use it. The batteries by name

The last 24 hours

Reading the day.

Generation by source, stacked, with the load Red Eléctrica had to meet drawn over it. Beneath it, on the same clock and each on its own scale, pumped hydro and the platform’s energy storage line: above their line they are sending power out, below it they are taking it in.

The borders

Reading the borders.

Physical flow on each border this quarter hour. Imports into Spain to the right, exports to the left, in megawatts. The platform carries no flow for the links to Morocco and Andorra.

The system figures are Red Eléctrica’s, published on the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform under Regulation (EU) 543/2013: actual load and actual generation per production type every quarter hour, and physical flows across the borders. Red Eléctrica’s newest quarter hour can arrive part filled, so the page reads the newest quarter hour reported in full. The day-ahead price is OMIE’s, read through the same platform and identical to OMIE’s own file. Nothing on this page is modelled; where a reading is missing the panel says which.
