Spain · every battery in the State gazette, and the batteries registered to trade

Spain’s State gazette names 224 battery installations since 2021, 8,195 MW, and authorised 2,450 MW of them in 2026 alone, nearly five times the year before.

8,195 MWof batteries in the State gazette since 2021: 224 installations, each read in full with the promoter, size, place and substation
1,623 MWauthorised to build in 50 installations, every one given its first authorisation and its authorisation to build in the same act
2,450 MWfirst authorised in 2026, to 25 October, against 501 MW in the whole of 2025
20batteries registered to trade on OMIE, the Iberian market, nine of them matched to an installation in the gazette

The State gazette read to 25 October 2026; OMIE’s list of units read 25 October 2026. Both are read every day.

Spain publishes no connection queue with names. What it does publish, act by act, is every step the State takes on a battery project: the public consultation, the environmental decision, the authorisations to build and the refusals. This page reads every such act in the Boletín Oficial del Estado since 2021, each one in full and each figure checked against the act’s own words, and joins them into one row per installation. Beside them sit the batteries OMIE, the Iberian market operator, lists as registered to trade.

The State authorised 2,450 MW of batteries in 2026 to 25 October, against 501 MW in the whole of 2025

Each bar is the battery power the State first authorised that year, by the date the act was published in the gazette. Consultations began in earnest in 2023 (24 installations, against 1 in 2022), and the authorisations followed from 2024. Where the gazette carries both, the median installation took 224 days from its public consultation to its authorisation to build; the quickest 118, the slowest 1,078.

The first authorisation (autorización administrativa previa) or the authorisation to build (de construcción), whichever came first; in every one of the 50 installations authorised to build, both were granted in the same act. The last bar is this year to the gazette’s latest read. The battery’s own power, never the access capacity it shares with a plant.

4,744 MW is still in consultation or environmental review

Every installation sits at the furthest step the gazette shows it has reached. A refusal, a withdrawal or an unfavourable environmental decision moves it to the last row, whatever came before.

1 installation declared of public utility with no other step is counted in no bar. Power is the battery’s own: its net power where an act states one (seven installations), and otherwise its installed power, the only figure most acts give. 15 installations whose acts state no battery power count in the installations and not in the MW.

180 of the 218 installations whose acts say so are added to a solar or wind plant

Spain lets a battery share the grid connection of a plant already authorised, so most of the gazette’s batteries are hybrids: 180 installations, 6,326 MW, added to a plant, against 38 stand-alone, 1,810 MW. Two sizes of store dominate: 80 of the 179 installations with both figures hold about two hours at full power, and 68 about four. The median is 3.5 hours.

11 of the 50 installations authorised to build connect at one substation, Don Rodrigo 400 kV

The gazette names 15 battery installations at the Don Rodrigo 400 kV substation, 583 MW, in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Carmona, Los Molares and Utrera. 14 of them are the same size, 39.6 MW, each added to a plant of its own and each applied for by a different company. Between 16 July and 25 August 2026 the State authorised 11 of them to build, 424 MW, which is 26% of all the battery power it has authorised to build.

Over the thirty days to 26 October 2026, Spanish power was cheapest at 14:00, €53/MWh on average, and dearest at 20:00, €241/MWh

A battery earns by buying power when it is cheap and selling it when it is dear. Spain’s solar farms push the price down in the middle of the day and it climbs again after sunset, which is the shape a Spanish battery trades. Each bar is the average day-ahead price in that hour of the day; the two cheapest and the two dearest hours are in colour.

OMIE, the Spanish day-ahead price of every quarter hour from 27 September 2026 to 26 October 2026, averaged by hour. Days when the clocks change are left out of the shape.

On the median day of September 2026, the two dearest hours cost €216/MWh more than the two cheapest

That gap is what a battery that charges and discharges once a day for two hours is paid to close, before its losses. Each bar is the month’s median day. In October 2025 the gap was €104/MWh.

The two hour spread is the average of the day’s eight dearest quarter hours less the average of its eight cheapest, as EPEX SPOT defines its TB2 index; the same figure as on the European prices page. OMIE’s prices, read daily to 25 October 2026. The last bar is the month so far.

20 batteries are registered to trade on OMIE, 256 MW where a source we may publish gives their size

OMIE publishes every day the units allowed to bid in the Iberian market, with the company that trades each. The storage units on it are the batteries registered to trade, grouped here one battery to a row. 13 have their size from the gazette or the owner’s own release. For the other seven, only Red Eléctrica’s register gives a size, and its terms allow publication for information only, so we have asked to publish it and show “held” until it answers.

Registered to trade is not by itself proof of running; what each battery has traded is below, from OMIE’s matched offers. OMIE’s storage list also carries Portuguese units, since the Iberian market is one, and units held by the regulated retailers that name no site; neither is counted here. Every registered battery, with a page each; the companies that trade them.

Spain’s batteries bought 10.9 GWh to charge in June 2026, nearly seven times as much as in the whole of 2025, at €22/MWh on average

OMIE publishes, about ninety days after each day, every offer made in the day-ahead market and the intraday auctions, with the unit that made it and how much of it was matched. A battery charges through a charging unit of its own, so what that unit bought is the battery’s charging, priced at what the market cleared at. Each bar is a month of the fleet’s charging.

051015GWhJan ’240.1Mar ’24May ’24Jul ’24Sep ’240Nov ’24Jan ’25Mar ’25May ’25Jul ’25Sep ’25Nov ’25Jan ’26Mar ’26Jun ’2611

OMIE, the offer curves of the day-ahead market and the intraday auctions with every unit named, January 2024 to June 2026, the latest month OMIE has published in full; each matched megawatt valued at the Spanish price of its market and period. Balancing services and the continuous intraday market are not in these files. OMIE’s monthly files lack the intraday offers of 29 April 2025 and 28 February 2026, though the auctions were held, so those days’ intraday trades are not counted.

They charge in the middle of the day: 83% of their charging falls between 12:00 and 17:00, when solar makes power cheapest

Each bar is the average power the batteries bought in that hour of the day, from their charging units, over April 2026, May 2026, June 2026. Set it beside the price shape above: the batteries buy in the hours when the price is lowest.

What each battery bought and sold, July 2025 to June 2026

A battery’s sales are its own only where every unit it trades through is a storage unit and it sold no more than it bought, since a battery loses energy on the way. Two pass that test. Most of Spain’s batteries were added to a solar or wind plant and sell through a unit they share with it, so that unit’s sales are the plant’s output and the battery’s together. Two have storage units of their own but sold more than they bought, so they also charge from the plant beside them without buying.
