What you may do with each layer
Share alike runs by feature type, not by product. Most of what is here can be reused commercially with attribution alone. Three feature types are derived from OpenStreetMap and carry the Open Database Licence with them.
Free to reuse commercially, with attribution
| Source | Licence |
|---|---|
| NESO connection registers, reform databook, constraint costs, boundaries | NESO Open Data Licence v1.0 |
| Capacity market register and de-rating classes | Open Government Licence |
| Renewable energy planning database | Open Government Licence |
| Companies House company data | Open Government Licence |
| Elexon balancing mechanism registry and settlement stack | Elexon open data |
| GeoNames settlement gazetteer | Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 |
| Natural Earth coastline | Public domain |
Carrying share alike
| Feature type | Why |
|---|---|
| Transmission circuits, 14,866 segments at 132 kV and above | A systematic extraction of a feature type from OpenStreetMap, so a derivative database. |
| Transmission substations, 3,365 records | The same extraction. Used as a gazetteer as well, which the OpenStreetMap Foundation treats as insubstantial. |
| Connection point coordinates matched by name, 267 of 601 | A mixed source feature type. NESO supplies some coordinates and OpenStreetMap the rest, and share alike applies to the whole feature type where sources are mixed. |
Those three are published as a separate database under the Open Database Licence so the obligation is met openly and nothing else is entangled with it, and it is not behind the subscriber line. Take it here: the transmission network, 14,866 circuits and 3,365 substations, free to everybody, no account, offered under the Open Database Licence 1.0. Attribution: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
A script reading that address must send a user agent header. Cloudflare answers 403 with error 1010 to the default one most HTTP libraries send, which is a bot rule rather than anything we intend, and it will be relaxed.
No warranty
Every source is published data supplied as is by its publisher. Scores, risk bands, platform groupings and node regions are inference and are labelled as such in the tool. Nothing here is a load flow study, a valuation or advice.
What belongs to Vitreous Labs
Most of what feeds this site is published data, and the tables above say which licence each source carries. Not all of it is published. Some records were obtained by hand, some were bought, and a large part of the value sits in work that no publisher did: matching one register against another, deciding when two entries are the same project, scoring what is likely to fail, grouping owners into platforms, correcting the published record where it is wrong, and forecasting a price the published record does not contain.
That work, the collection it produces and everything built on top of it belong to Vitreous Labs. It covers the assembled databases, the deduplication and matching rules, the attrition score, the delivery risk model, the ownership platform grouping, the duration profile, the balancing mechanism cross reference, the day ahead price forecast and the model behind it, the change ledger, the written analysis, the page designs and the code that produces all of them. Copyright in those is ours. So is the database right that United Kingdom law gives to a collection where substantial investment went into obtaining, verifying and presenting the contents. An open licence on an input does not carry through to the collection built from it.
What you may do
Read the site. Quote it, with attribution to Vitreous Labs and a link. Use the figures in your own analysis, in investment papers and in documents you produce. Take the transmission network database above under the Open Database Licence, free and without an account. Go to any source named on this page and reuse it under its own licence, which is yours to use and has nothing to do with us.
What needs our written permission
Copying a database held here, or a substantial part of one. Repeated extraction of small parts to the same effect. Automated collection of any kind against this site, including crawling, scraping and bulk retrieval through the interface. Republishing our pages, figures or forecasts as a product of your own. Using anything here as training data for a model. Sharing a subscriber key, which is issued to one named subscriber and whose use is logged.
This is a plain statement of the position Vitreous Labs takes, and a reading of the OpenStreetMap Foundation's published community guidelines. It is not legal advice and it changes nothing about the terms of the open licences listed above.
