Italy has 290 GW of storage asking to connect. 10.5 GW of it has reached the stage the new rule protects.
Terna, Econnextion, requests at 31 August 2026, read 29 September 2026. Terna updates the report monthly; we read it when it moves.
Puglia and Sicilia hold 43% of the queue. One municipality, Brindisi, has asked for 13.3 GW, more than 12 of Italy’s 20 regions.

Terna, Econnextion, requests at 31 August 2026, storage of all kinds. Each circle is Terna’s figure for the municipality, rounded by Terna’s export to 10 MW; the coordinates are the municipality centroids Terna publishes. Region boundaries from ISTAT. 814 municipalities drawn.
Open the Development Atlas Projects by nameTerna publishes every request to connect a storage system to the Italian transmission grid, by municipality, by technology and by how far along the request is. It does not publish who is asking, how big any one request is, or where it would connect. This page is Terna’s register read whole, with nothing added and nothing estimated.
What changes now
On 8 September 2026 the energy ministry signed the decree that ends first come, first served on the Italian transmission grid. Terna will divide the grid into microzones, publish how much new capacity each can take, and update that figure at least every three months. Applicants choose a connection solution in an open season held at least quarterly. Capacity is reserved only when a project holds its permit, in the order the permits are published. Connection solutions already issued lose effect within fifteen days of the regulator’s implementing measures, unless the grid works behind them are already validated, authorised or built.
Read against the table below, that means the 290 GW on paper is about to be cut down to the projects that can show a permit, and Terna has been ordered to publish who they are. Only 10.5 GW has a final solution or a contract today. The rest is exposed.

The municipalities with the most stand-alone battery capacity asked for
Terna’s export prints each municipality’s figure to the nearest 10 MW, so these are good to that and the column does not add exactly to the regional totals above.

What is not here, and why
The applicant’s name, the size of a single request and the connection point are not published by Terna today. The decree orders them onto Terna’s Portale Terra; no date is set, and this page will carry them the month they appear. The operating fleet by site is not published either, so no ratio of paper to built is drawn for Italy. Requests to the distribution grids are held by the distributors and are not in this register.
