Svenska kraftnät has approved 1,730 MW of battery storage to hold frequency reserve, 173 times what it had in January 2023. Owners name 55 batteries operating, 909 MW.
Svenska kraftnät’s pages and open data read 25 October 2026. Statistics Sweden’s table updated 8 October 2026. The owners’ releases read to 25 October 2026. Rebuilt on every refresh.
Sweden publishes no list of its batteries. Three bodies count them and name none: Statistics Sweden the megawatts connected at each year end, Svenska kraftnät the storage it has approved for each reserve market and the storage waiting in its connection queue, and the trade body Green Power Sweden the battery cases filed with the county boards. So this page reads those counts side by side with the batteries their owners and builders have named in their own words, and with what one megawatt is paid in the markets Svenska kraftnät runs.
Owners name nearly all the large batteries Statistics Sweden counts, and few of the small ones
Statistics Sweden, with the Swedish Energy Agency, counted 1,128 MW and 1,172 MWh of batteries connected to the grid at the end of 2025, and splits the count by how much each battery stores. In the batteries holding more than 10 MWh it counted 666 MW and 671 MWh. The batteries their owners name as running by the end of 2025 with a stated store in that range hold 592 MW and 670 MWh between 26 of them, and 4 more, 102 MW, were running with no store published: Bredhälla, Göteborg (Ingrid and Locus), Haninge (Polar Capacity), Kungälv (Flower). Counted with those four, the named list reaches Statistics Sweden’s count of the large batteries; on stated stores alone it holds 592 of its 666 MW. Below 10 MWh it does not come close: Statistics Sweden counts 232 MW in batteries of 1 to 10 MWh, and owners name 7 of them, 39 MW. A further 230 MW sits in batteries under 1 MWh, homes and small businesses mostly, which this site does not list.
Statistics Sweden, table “Nätanslutna batterier efter lagringskapacitet” (EN0105, source the Swedish Energy Agency, CC0), updated 8 October 2026; its own footnote says the batteries’ total storage and power are probably under-reported. The named batteries counted are those their owners give as operating with a start in 2025 or before, sized by their stated MWh, and the blue bar over 10 MWh includes the 4 running with no store published; the 14 BW ESS and Ingrid batteries carry no MWh each, and are taken as one hour because their owners give the portfolio as 211 MW and 211 MWh. The grey bar for the smallest batteries has no blue beside it because the site does not list them.

Svenska kraftnät has approved 1,730 MW of storage to sell FCR-D up, from 10 MW in January 2023. That is more than the batteries anyone names
Before a battery may sell a reserve, Svenska kraftnät tests it and approves it for that product, and it publishes the storage it has approved, product by product, about four times a year. The figure for FCR-D up, the upward disturbance reserve and the product batteries entered first and in the largest numbers, went from 10 MW in January 2023 to 1,250 MW on 1 January 2026 and 1,730 MW on 1 October 2026. It runs ahead of every other count for two reasons. Approval is for the storage behind a seller, so home and small business batteries pooled by an aggregator count, and Svenska kraftnät’s list of fast frequency reserve sellers for 2026 names CheckWatt, whose virtual power plant pools “thousands of distributed batteries” (cnet.se, November 2023). And it counts batteries that started in 2026, which Statistics Sweden has not yet counted. It does not double count: a battery approved for several products appears once under each.
By 1 October 2026 the storage approved for upward mFRR, 1,755 MW, had caught it up, from under 10 MW on 1 January 2024.
Svenska kraftnät, “Utbud på marknaderna för reserver”, the storage line (Energilager) for FCR-D up, rounded to the nearest 10 MW by SvK; its spreadsheet of past figures for each 1 January from 2023, and its page for 1 October 2026, read 25 October 2026. Storage combined with hydro or wind is counted by SvK on lines of its own (110 MW for FCR-D up on 1 October 2026) and is left out here.

The market is crowded: 2.4 megawatts of storage approved for every megawatt of FCR-D up Svenska kraftnät bought in Sweden in January 2026, from 0.02 in January 2023
Svenska kraftnät buys a roughly steady amount of FCR-D up each hour, about five hundred megawatts in Sweden’s four zones, while the storage approved to sell it keeps growing. Set the approved storage against the average volume bought in the same month and the line passes one, as much approved as is bought, in January 2025. Since then batteries compete with each other for the volume, and the price follows: the FCR-D up price that paid one megawatt about €13,000 in February 2024 paid under €3,000 in March 2026.
The storage approved is Svenska kraftnät’s figure at each published date; the volume is the average hourly FCR-D up it bought in SE1 to SE4 that month, the two daily auctions together, DK2 left out, from its Data Service (CC BY 4.0). A battery can be approved for several products at once, and then counts in the ratio of each.
The best hour by hour stack paid one megawatt in SE3 €52,108 in February 2024 and €19,306 in March 2026
Swedish batteries earn mostly by holding reserve for Svenska kraftnät, which buys it hour by hour in markets whose prices and volumes it publishes. The bars are the most one megawatt in SE3, the Stockholm zone where most Swedish batteries are, could have been paid each month with perfect hindsight, choosing the best product every hour, before any cost; a real battery earns less. FCR is one market for the whole country, so its price is the same in every zone; aFRR and mFRR are priced zone by zone, which is why the ceiling differs a little between them. Over the twelve months to March 2026 the ceiling in SE3 was €500,445 for the megawatt.
Calculated by Vitreous from Svenska kraftnät’s hourly prices and volumes on its Data Service (CC BY 4.0); a price counts only in an hour in which SvK bought something. The bars start in February 2024, when FCR moved to one clearing price, and the FCR figures stop on 14 April 2026, when SvK stopped publishing FCR on its Data Service; the months after carry only aFRR and mFRR and are left out of the ceiling. The grey bar is a part month. Energy trading on the day-ahead and intraday markets is not in these figures, because Nord Pool’s prices may not be shown here. Every market and zone, month by month, and how each figure is made.
Held back until the publisher answers in writing: Svenska kraftnät’s Mimer files, the only home of FCR after 14 April 2026 and of FCR’s pay as bid prices before February 2024, which state no terms of reuse; eSett’s metered battery output per zone, whose terms say the data is public but grant no right to republish; the county boards’ public diaries, which carry no terms at all. Each is read and kept on schedule, and the pages are built to show it the day the answer comes.

Of the 909 MW named as operating, 585 MW is in SE3, 104 MW in SE4, 217 MW in SE2 and 2.5 MW in SE1. The queue points the same way. Svenska kraftnät’s own connection queue held 2,260 MW of storage asking to feed in and 2,176 MW asking to draw out on 1 October 2026, 2,196 MW and 2,152 MW of it in SE3; and of the 130 battery cases the county boards approved from 2021 to 2025, Green Power Sweden counts 64 in SE3 and 46 in SE4.

Named running: the batteries their owners name as operating. Queue in and queue out: storage asking to feed power into the grid and to draw power from it. Cases approved and their MW: battery cases the county boards approved. Svenska kraftnät, “Ansökt effekt per elområde” and “Information om pågående anslutningsärenden”, power waiting in its queue until capacity is reserved, as of 1 October 2026, read 25 October 2026; the transmission grid only, so a battery asking to join a regional or local grid is not in it. Green Power Sweden, “Batteriparksstatus 2025”, tables 7 and 8: cases filed with the county boards for consultation under chapter 12, section 6 of the Environmental Code, or as part of a wind or solar permit, approved from 2021 to 2025; power is Green Power Sweden’s estimate, since only 39 of 168 cases state it. Neither names a project.
Open the Atlas, every battery on the map Every battery, one page each Who owns them Who trades them What changed, read by read The system, right now168 battery cases went to the county boards from 2021 to 2025, about 7.4 GW by Green Power Sweden’s estimate, against 909 MW anyone names as running
A battery park outside an industrial site is usually notified to its county board for consultation before it is built, and a battery inside a wind or solar park is part of that park’s permit. Green Power Sweden asked all 21 county boards for those papers and counted 168 cases filed from 2021 to 2025: 118 stand-alone batteries, 39 beside solar, 8 beside wind and 3 beside both. The boards approved 130, refused or turned away 10, and had 28 still open at the end of 2025. Only 39 of the cases state their power, 2,163 MW between them; the rest is Green Power Sweden’s estimate from the area each covers. Svenska kraftnät’s own queue, which holds only what asks to join the transmission grid, had 2,260 MW of storage in it. Neither count names a project.

What is not here, and why
Which batteries make up the official counts, because no Swedish body publishes a unit list. What each battery earns, because Svenska kraftnät publishes each market’s prices and volumes and names no bidder, so the money here is what one megawatt could earn in each market. The day-ahead price, because it is Nord Pool’s and Nord Pool declined permission to show it; Svenska kraftnät republishes it on its Data Service, and whether that licence covers showing it here has been asked. FCR after 14 April 2026, and FCR’s prices before February 2024, because they are published only on Mimer, which states no terms. The batteries’ own metered output per zone, which eSett publishes with no right to republish stated. The county boards’ battery cases by name, from their diaries, which carry no terms. Coordinates for most batteries, because no owner publishes them. A connection figure is never passed off as a battery’s size.
